Best Touhou controller?
« on: April 04, 2013, 10:24:25 PM »
I've been experimenting with different controllers and still haven't found one that I don't feel like is occasionally making things harder for me than they need to be.

-My first impulse is to use an arcade stick, and they seem to have pluses and minuses. A stick gives much more precise control over diagonal movement than other options and makes smooth curved movements more possible. However, the travel on the stick makes very slight movements extremely difficult, or at least inconsistent. Also kind of a hassle to set up every time I want to play, and sticks are fairly noisy which I'm sure my roommates don't love late at night, which is when I do most of my gaming.

-The thing I tend to use the most (and I think most people do) is a keyboard, but the keyboard gives me a lot of trouble sometimes too. Part of that I think is because it's a laptop keyboard, so I suppose I could buy a gaming keyboard but I want some input before I do that. Keyboards give great control over small movements but are uncomfortable to use for a long time and, at least for me, make angled movements very tricky. It's also significant that the arrow keys on this laptop have a split up/down key (two half-sized keys taking up the space of one normal key) which is both good and bad. It feels more comfortable but occasionally causes me to hit both directions at once and die.

-I started playing on a crappy 360 fight pad, and it actually seems like a decent option despite cheapness. The control stick has a much shorter travel distance than an arcade stick, which makes tiny movements more doable. However, the smaller size of the hardware means that the microswitches are closer together, so it's hard to know exactly which ones you're triggering sometimes when you make sudden angled movements. The buttons, at least on mine, feel really loose and in games that use three buttons I'm always worried I'll accidentally just barely nudge the middle button when going for the third one and do something I don't intend to. I've also had a fair amount of trouble getting some of the games to recognize the pad correctly.

-I briefly used a standard 360 controller and didn't like it at all. The control sticks inegrate the too-large travel distance of the stick with the ambiguousness of the pad but worse, the way the buttons are set up makes intuitively mapping a third button difficult for games that use three buttons, and I generally find Xbox controllers uncomfortable.

Are there any other major options that people like to use? Has anyone tried a joystick? So far it looks like the best answer might just be picking the best of my flawed options on a case by case basis (I prefer the stick for Ten Desires and the keyboard for Subterranean Animism, although it makes the last spell in the game way harder than it needs to be). Any advice or input would be appreciated.

i'd use a usb n64 controller. the control stick can be used for general movement and you can tap the control pad to nudge small distances.
here is a link to buy one http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/f08c/
or, if you already have an n64 controller, here is a converter. it has 2 ports so if you have 2 controllers you can play pofv with a friend or something http://www.amazon.com/May-Flash-Controller-Adapter-Nintendo-64/dp/B002B9FIUU

Hmm, that's an interesting idea. I've probably handled an N64 controller for less than two hours in my life (had a Playstation), but that looks like it could work really well if I can get used to it. I can probably turn up an old controller for nothing and try an adapter.

I hear one of my buddies from high school has a USB N64 controller and I'll be in his area later this week, so I'm going to drop by and try it out.

I've been at a con all weekend and there was a Touhou panel this afternoon. I asked the panelists what kinds of controllers they use and all of them apparently like keyboards. They told me that some people like Sega Saturn controllers. I've never used or even see a Saturn controller, but based on pictures I don't see the potential. I assume they meant the big round ones with the control stick and the d-pad, and those look weird and hard to hold. Would be worth trying if I ever happen across one though.

i was looking for wireless gamecube controllers so i could play games from far away and i saw this: http://www.thrustmaster.com/products/t-wireless-3-1-rumble-force it's a 3-in-1 controller that works with ps2, ps3, and pc. it has turbo and slow buttons, vibrate, and you can rearrange the layout of buttons. i may get the gamecube version of it which also works with wii :D

Wow, that is one ugly controller. Looks like a slightly worse 360 controller, although compatibility would be convenient. Not a big fan of wireless controllers though, espcially given that my laptop is usually right in front of me.

If you're still open for suggestions, I personally use Genius MaxFire Grandias 12V. The D-pad is pantsy so you're kinda forced to use the joystick. Comfortable though. I have pretty big thumbs and long nails with a built-in thermonuclear warhead and still can move precisely. Dunno if it's available in your place, but if you can get one, I'll recommend it for sure.  ;)

depends on the game, but usually it's this
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/01/N64-Controller-in-Hand.jpg
blue button is a, for jumping or whatever
green button is b for attacking or whatever
red one is start
control stick (and sometimes but less often the control pad) is for movement
z (trigger under the middle stick) and r are for whatever. use z as you would an l button on other controllers
l button on the left side is usually unused or does something the game doesnt tell you (on mario kart 64 it turns the background music on and off)
c buttons are usually for camera controls (like super mario 64) or extra items (like in zelda) or they're unused for simpler games (like kirby 64)

hope that helps :D

That looks/sounds promising, except if the pad is no good that's pretty limiting.

depends on the game...

Oh you're gonna hate the D-pad. Push the down key and you'll move diagonally to the lower left/right corner. Lucky I grew up as a console gamer and getting used to joysticks.  ;D
